I didn’t keep a journal so looking back begins with recollecting key moments in my trajectory from TESL Ontario member to where I am now in my role as Chair of the Board of Directors. You too can join this journey.
Pre-Journey
It all began with an email calling for members to apply to join the Board of Directors and my readiness to step up to the challenge. My experience as past Executive Board Member of TESL Toronto and active roles as TESL Ontario blogger, webinar moderator, and video editor, along with my readiness to take on a new leadership role were key in my decision to apply.
Vision
At the time of my application, the organization was focused on second language education. I strongly felt our skillset gave us solid ground to expand our landscape, specifically within colleges and universities. My platform focused on strengthening our position in the field by promoting OCELT and standard membership as pedagogical strengths that show that TESL Ontario members had (and have) the capacity to teach not only English-as-a second language learners but also meet the needs of all English and communications students, many of whom are 1.5 generation. My rationale, therefore, was rooted (and still is!) on helping the membership gain access to English language education both as teachers and leaders.
From Member-at-Large to Chair of the Board
I was humbled by the trust the membership placed on me, twice. Thank you. Listening and my willingness to learn and to allocate time to serve were key in my journey. I gained invaluable insight with the help of a great mentor. David Hazell, thank you. Moving through the roles of treasurer, Vice-Chair, and Chair have been highlights in my journey. Witnessing how our Executive Director, amazing staff, and hard-working volunteers have brought the strategic plan into fruition and having our land acknowledgment included permanently in our meeting agendas are also moments of immense pride.
You see, joining the board is an honour—an opportunity to give to our professional field, to help in strengthening our employability scope, and nurture our leadership skills. Although taking on executive leadership roles within the Board is not a requirement, it is definitely an option. I chose that option. Your journey is your calling, but you need to apply to join.
Your Time is Now
If you are a TESL Ontario member, have experience serving, and have a vision, I encourage you to join the mission as Board Member.
Remember, TESL Ontario remains strong because we have us. Our Executive Director and staff are there because of us. They do the work well because they listen to us. Your role is to carry on the torch.
As my two, three-year terms come to an end, I am confident that TESL Ontario will keep on doing great work. The Board will remain strong because of you.
To apply for a board position, please visit TESL Ontario Board Recruitment before the deadline of Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
