ETHICAL USE OF AI IN THE CLASSROOM

Artificial Intelligence is an exciting innovation which is taking the world by storm. Teachers and students are discovering the endless possibilities it offers, such as saving time searching for ideas, drafting, and assisting with various tasks. AI is a powerful tool, but in the hands of the uninitiated, it can lead to ethical issues. One can imagine the potential harm that could be caused by the exposure of children’s personal data, for example. This article explores the ethical use of AI in the classroom and some solutions to mitigate the dangers.

Some Issues of AI Use in the Classroom 

Fairness

Teachers are often faced with the challenge of fairness in AI use. For example, students who have access to AI and use it for class assignments will have an advantage over those who don’t, and assignments written with the aid of AI may not be an accurate indicator of a student’s abilities. 

Accuracy and Originality

It is important to remember that AI processes and stores data from sources which may be hard to verify. When using AI as a teacher, it is important to be critical of the information it provides. It is equally important for students to acknowledge their use of AI as a source of information, as they would any other research source. A random search on the internet revealed a number of AI-driven websites which offer paid services for students’ papers.

AI Bias

AI grading programs may have biases that can result in unfair grading and incorrect feedback. Or perhaps that a group of high achievers should consistently sit in the front row of the class. Teachers’ training programs certainly do not allow for this sort of discrimination!

It is vital to understand that AI is not a replacement for teachers, and there is no substitute for human interaction. Teachers should also view any AI material they intend to use critically, gauging whether it is suitable for the level and context of the class. Despite AI’s many advantages, the human element is vital for students’ growth: words of praise, body language, mannerisms, emotions, and rapport cannot be mimicked by AI which is only a language model after all. 

Also, teachers should work independently, objectively, verify content for factual accuracy, and look for AI copy-paste in students’ papers. Since AI can provide misleading or inaccurate information, it is essential to fact-check.

Security Policies

Students should also be taught digital privacy to help them to use AI safely inside and outside the classroom.

Thankfully, most universities have their own databases with end-to-end encryption which means that only the sender and the receiver can access the information. Furthermore, all these databases require passwords which the university provides ensuring that people outside the system have no access, thereby enhancing both privacy and security.

Equity

AI should be accessible to all students regardless of gender, social, economic or ethnic background. Some students may not have devices, so the administration should provide shared resources like a computer lab with free internet access. Another way is to use AI features like text-to-speech and translations tools which can reach diverse groups of students and help them access  learning material more easily.

Transparency

Finally, it is important to be transparent in the use of AI. As AI systems are still a recent innovation, school admins and teachers should inform parents and students  about how AI is being used in the classroom, the ethics around it, and how to avoid the risks.

Conclusion

To sum up, AI is a game changer and can greatly enhance the classroom experience when combined with the teacher’s expertise. However, it is important to reiterate that its ethical use revolves around protecting student privacy, content review and equity. The bottom line is that AI is only a tool to support education, not a substitute.
