If you had asked me 15 years ago whether I would ever become a board member at a respected non-profit organization like TESL Ontario, I likely would have said, “Probably not.” At that time, I did not fully understand what board members did or what their role meant in practice. I also did not know how serving on a board could help me grow personally or professionally.
Today, I see it very differently. I believe serving on a board is a valuable opportunity that many ESL instructors in Ontario should consider.
In 2016, I began volunteering with TESL Ontario through the TESL Waterloo Wellington chapter. I took on different volunteer roles at the chapter level, and that experience helped me better understand the structure of the ESL and TESL communities in Ontario. It also gave me the chance to take part in meaningful events that supported instructors and learners in our field.
Later, I wanted to become even more involved and learn more about the value of membership in TESL Ontario. I applied to join the Board of Directors and was fortunate to be selected in 2022. Since then, I have continued serving and learning.
Being a board member has shown me how much dedication exists within our profession. I have had the chance to work alongside thoughtful and hardworking colleagues who care deeply about supporting the TESL and ESL communities across Ontario. They are committed to maintaining strong professional standards and helping our sector move forward.
Many classroom teachers may not always see the amount of work that happens behind the scenes. Board members spend time reviewing policies, discussing important issues, planning future goals, and making decisions that support language education in the province. Seeing this process firsthand has been eye-opening for me.
Attending board meetings, listening to experienced professionals, sharing ideas, and contributing to discussions have all helped me grow. These experiences have made me more informed about our field and better prepared to offer practical suggestions when challenges arise.
Another part of the experience I value is the learning that happens outside meetings. Reading board materials, reports, and updates has expanded my understanding of governance, leadership, and current issues in language education. Over time, this broader perspective has helped me feel more grounded, confident, and purposeful in my everyday work.
Serving on the board has also strengthened my professional role in the workplace. I often become the person colleagues or managers turn to when they have questions about TESL Ontario, professional standards, or membership benefits. This deeper understanding has helped me contribute in more meaningful ways.
I also believe leadership experience matters. Taking on volunteer and governance roles shows commitment, initiative, and a willingness to support the profession. These qualities can strengthen how we see ourselves as professionals and how others see the value we bring.
Looking back, joining the board has been one of the most rewarding steps in my career. I encourage fellow professionals in our field to consider getting involved. And remember, our voice and experience can make a real difference.
