A new, free, and open learning platform, CanAvenue, was launched in October 2024. CanAvenue is for learners aiming to improve their language skills outside of the classroom. This LMS is designed to support learners at high beginner to intermediate stages through interactive-self-directed activities, practice modules, and resources that help them navigate Canadian language learning without formal classes or instruction. As there are no registration restrictions, CanAvenue is openly available, making it a tempting resource for newcomers or anyone looking to improve their additional language skills in a self-directed environment.
Built for Independence
CanAvenue was created to support independent learning, enabling users to explore language topics on their own terms and at their own pace. Unlike conventional classroom environments, CanAvenue has no classes, cohorts, or formal progress tracking making it a stress-free space where learners can work at their own pace. Since all registrants are classified as students, there are no instructor or administrative roles on CanAvenue, meaning that users have full control over their learning journey. However, teachers and administrators can refer students to CanAvenue to explore resources and activities that enhance their language learning outside the classroom.
Who is it for?
The platform serves a diverse group of language learners including prospective immigrants preparing for life in Canada, those on waiting lists for formal language training, learners enrolled in formal language programs (such as LINC) who want supplementary curriculum, and any language learner preferring an autonomous learning path. Additionally, CanAvenue is a resource for newcomers who have finished their formal language training eligibility but wish to continue developing skills. Refugee claimants and temporary foreign workers looking to enhance their language proficiency are also free to use the platform.
CanAvenue Courses
CanAvenue’s courses cover several key areas of interest, including:
- Canadian Citizenship: Resources that explain citizenship topics allow learners to familiarize themselves with cultural, historical, political and legal knowledge, which is especially valuable for those preparing for citizenship applications.
- Formal Language Training: Learners can explore the essentials of formal language, gaining insight into how language is learned in formal classes offered in Canadian settings.
- English Practice: Improved from edulinc courseware, the English practice section provides valuable exercises to help learners reinforce core language skills.
- Pronunciation: This course offers independent activities focused on improving pronunciation, a critical skill for effective communication in a new language.
- Extensive reading and listening libraries: Students who want to improve comprehension skills through Canadian-themed reading materials can take advantage of the original 100 plus titles with comprehension quizzes.
Self-Directed and Collaborative Learning
CanAvenue supports a variety of learning styles by offering both formative and summative assessments. Learners can access a personal grade-book for their review purposes which allows them to track their progress and revisit areas that may require improvement. Different activities on the platform use various methods to measure achievement from viewing the activity completion checkboxes to more interactive options like self-checking and receiving grades on practice tasks.
CanAvenue also allows learners to explore the content independently or with friends and family, thus affording the chance to form informal learning circles. This feature is beneficial for learners who want to stay motivated by engaging with peers, encouraging a collaborative learning environment outside of formal classes.
Important Considerations
While CanAvenue is a promising resource, there are a few guidelines and limitations to keep in mind:
Teachers cannot create learner accounts or track students on CanAvenue. If instructors wish to review content, they must register as students.
The CanAvenue grade-book is available for personal review and is not connected to any external learning platforms like Avenue nor are assessments linked to any formal newcomer language programs.
Since CanAvenue is an independent resource, it offers limited support services, reports, or learner tracking. Support features are in the planning stages to be deployed in the near future.
One exciting potential development on the horizon is a moderated social forum where learners can share their personal stories and connect with others on similar learning journeys. Additionally, new learning events are being considered to bring more innovative and interactive opportunities to CanAvenue. This will enhance the independent learning experience for learners moving into the future.
Why Recommend CanAvenue to Canadian newcomers?
CanAvenue, canavenue.ca, is a valuable tool for anyone looking to pursue language learning anywhere, anytime, and at their own pace. It offers a non-intimidating learning environment where learners are free to explore without the pressures of formal assessment, formal attendance demands or deadlines. With its focus on Canadian content, CanAvenue not only teaches language skills but also helps learners immerse themselves in Canadian culture, making it an ideal resource for newcomers to Canada.
