What to Look Forward to at the 2024 Conference

Whether you’re a returning attendee or joining us for the first time, the TESL Annual Conference is underway to deliver insightful sessions, innovative topics, and networking opportunities. We spoke with two of our key organizers: Mohsen Jazeb, Event Coordinator, and Allison Keown, TESL Ontario’s Executive Director, to give you a sneak peek into what to expect.

2024: Navigating New Routes in Language Education

The theme for the 2024 conference is “Navigating New Routes in Language Education”, a reflection of the recent, rapid innovations in the field of language education. Mohsen explains:

This year’s conference theme, ‘Navigating New Routes in Language Education,’ reflects our focus on the dynamic shifts in our field. We are diving deep into cutting-edge developments, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) in language teaching and learning. However, our agenda goes beyond technology; we are also addressing diverse topics including LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), Plurilingualism, Indigenous Resources, and effective lesson planning strategies. Our goal is to offer something valuable for every attendee, no matter where their interests lie.

What to Expect?

The 2024 TESL Ontario Annual Conference promises a dynamic lineup of content designed to inspire and educate. This year’s event will feature:

  • Two engaging keynote speakers
  • Interactive workshops, and our 19th Annual Panel Discussion, featuring ministry representatives
  • Opportunities for networking
  • Roundtable Discussions
  • Techknow Sessions
  • Research Symposium

Career development remains a focal point of the conference, with several new initiatives planned for 2024. Allison shared:

We recognize that career development is a big part of the conference experience. This year, we are launching our new employment discussion panel to expand our Career Connections sessions. The panel will allow participants to engage in conversation with employer panelists and receive candid responses to important career development questions.

TESL Ontario is renowned for fostering meaningful professional connections, and the 2024 in-person event will continue this tradition. Mohsen Jazeb highlights the importance of creating spaces for networking:

We have designed the conference to maximize professional networking and engagement opportunities. Participants can join virtual roundtables on various topics, where they can exchange experiences and ideas with peers in breakout rooms. Additionally, every presentation will include a Q&A segment, offering direct interaction with experts. One of our standout features this year is the Career Conversations session, where attendees can pose questions to field experts, gaining insights and advice to propel their careers forward.

What’s New?

This year’s conference comes with some exciting changes and additions to make the experience even more engaging for all participants:

  • Virtual conference format: Building on the success of previous years, the conference will once again offer a flexible and accessible virtual platform for all attendees.
  • Virtual gamification: New interactive engagement activities will be introduced, adding a fun and innovative way to connect during the virtual sessions.
  • The highly anticipated return of the in-person awards ceremony and networking event, which will include an interactive panel discussion, giving attendees the chance to reconnect face-to-face.
